Completion of the “9th Sports Celebration for Mental Health & Intellectual Disability”
On the morning of the 27th of February 2018, 131 participants from 12 psychosocial rehabilitation units of the Region of Attica , took part in the “9th Sports Celebration for Mental Health & Intellectual Disability” that was organized by the non-profit organization Social Cooperative Activities for Vulnerable Groups - K.S.D.E.O. "EDRA" at the indoor sports hall “Giorgos Stefanopoulos” in Bournazi, Athens. Once more, the support of the Preschool Education- Sports & Welfare Organization (O.P.A.A.P.) of the Municipality of Peristeri has been instrumental for the realization of the event.

The sports presented for 2018 were: Basketball (shooting the ball from a mid and short distance from the basket) and Relay Race with the use of a ball. Overall, there were 131 participants in the event (mental health services users and people with intellectual disabilities – 72 took part in basketball and 36 in the Relay Race, while 23 people escorted the participants). At the end of this big event-celebration for mental health and intellectual disability, all the participants received an award for their efforts!
During the opening of the event the children of the award-winning gymnastics team “BABES Gymnastics for All” of the Gymnastics Athletic Association “EIRINI” of Peristeri, presented a very impressive gymnastics program that was greeted with great enthusiasm by the audience and has set the stage for the participants of the sports that followed.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of an award to the Paralympic gold medalist Boccia player and flag-bearer of the Greek Team in Rio 2016, Grigorios Polychronidis, who, along with his escort and wife, Katerina Patroni, who is also an athlete, offered the audience a demonstration of the Boccia game, with the voluntary participation of a group of students from the Department of Physical Education & Sports of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The students formed two teams and gained an insight into the game, which demands both technique and strategy, in order for an athlete to win.
The contribution of the volunteers and the students of the Department of Physical Education & Sports of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, as well as that of their Assistant Professor, Mr. Manolis Skordilis, was instrumental for the success of the event.
Present at the event were the Deputy Mayor of Education & Social Policy of the Municipality of Peristeri. Mr. Anastasios Theodorakos, the President of the Preschool Education- Sports & Welfare Organization of the Municipality of Peristeri, Mrs. Polyxeni-Evangelia Korogianni and the Vice President of the Preschool Education- Sports & Welfare Organization of the Municipality of Peristeri, Mr. Dimitrios Chiotis.

Within the context of the 9th Sports Celebration for Mental Health and Intellectual Disability the program of the 1st European Sports Event for Mental Health (EVENTS Project) was presented. The event will take place between the 7th - 9th of September, 2018, at the sports facilities of the Municipality of Galatsi, under the coordination of K.S.D.E.O. “EDRA” and the auspices of the President of the European Parliament, with the participation of 300 people who practice sports from 14 different European countries and the valuable cooperation of the Municipality of Galatsi, the Region of Attica and the Faculty of Sport Science and Sports of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
