Press Release

On June 8th the global community celebrated the Planet’s Oceans reminding all of us that they urgently need our protection. We have to show sensitivity and understanding as our very life depends on the seas.

Few days earlier, on June 4th HELMEPA, the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association completed 38 years of operation. Its non-profit making mission is, through continuous information and training, to motivate the maritime world to change habits and protect the seas from the pollution ships can generate. With the well-known figure of its Seagull, HELMEPA tried also to alert and inform the wider community and especially the younger generations. The new poster of the Seagull has just been circulated marking the launch of this year’s summer awareness campaign.

It was therefore a great satisfaction for us when on Sunday 7 June we were informed that a group of visitors – among them HELMEPA Members – during their excursion to a near to Athens island, they voluntarily cleaned up a remote beach and transferred many bags of litter, mainly plastics, to the main harbor for collection.

This spontaneous initiative justifies decades-long efforts and constitutes also an example to be followed by all those of us who remember the old but ever contemporary message: “No garbage, No plastics in our Seas and on our Beaches”.
