GLOBAL SUSTAIN: Sustainability Forum 2021

For the tenth consecutive year, the Global Sustain Sustainability Forum, a unique event for corporate responsibility and sustainable development took place on October 8, 2021, at the NJV Athens Plaza, Greece, with limited physical presence.

For the second consecutive year, considering safety protocols due to COVID-19 pandemic, the event took place in hybrid form (phygital), it was certified with the Certification Scheme TÜV AUSTRIA COVID Shield, while speakers followed safety guidelines suggested by GEP, in compliance with law. Specifically, over 90 people watched the sessions via live streaming, and benefited from networking opportunities through the LiveOn special platform.

The conference was opened by Mr. Michael Spanos, CEO of Global Sustain, who spoke about the EU Sustainable Finance Framework with special reference το the European Green Deal and the renewed EU Sustainable Finance Strategy. He talked about the EU Taxonomy Delegated Act which provides guidance on which economic activities are sustainable and contribute to climate neutrality, as well as the European Green Bond Standard proposal. Finally, he referred to the increasing digitalisation of sustainability information, a trend that holds out the possibility over time of lower reporting costs for companies and radical improvements in how investors and other stakeholders can compare and use reported information.

Mrs. Maria Rita Galli, CEO of DESFA, analyzed the organization's ESG strategy, referring to the Towards Net Zero commitment including all the aspects of the Company for the next decades, by 2050.

Mrs. Elena Athoussaki, Head of ESG, Sustainability & Climate Change, Motor Oil Group, spoke about the role of fossil fuels in sustainable energy transition and the company's strategy to achieve sustainability (net zero future).

The challenges of banking in the ESG era were highlighted by Mr. Simon Thomson, CEO of the Chartered Banker Institute.

The Eurobank initiative for the demographic issue was presented by Mr. Michalis Vlastarakis, General Manager, Eurobank Group Marketing and Corporate Communications. Synergies with NGOs but also society-oriented products were mentioned as well.

Mrs. Christina Antoniou, CEO, Daikin Greece, shared with the attendees the "Environmental Vision 2050", carbon-neutral solutions through innovation and cooperation, as well as circular economy initiatives.

Ms. Eva Chioti, Public Affairs Manager Cyprus Malta of The Coca-Cola Company, analyzed the Zero Waste Future a recycling and circular economy initiative, which aims to become key driver of change.

Pandemic v sustainability and the approach of Bausch Health was the topic of Mr. Iakovos Michailitsis, General Manager of Bausch Health Hellas. Mr. Michailitsis referred to the company's response to ensure business continuity, protection of health and safety of employees, uninterrupted flow of the supply of medicines and support to those in need.

The way cybersecurity supports business sustainability was analyzed by Dr. Leandros Maglaras, explaining how by incorporating elements of sustainability management into cybersecurity can improve the cybersecurity posture of an organization.

Mr. Thomas Kolster, author, and marketing activist, spoke about the post-purpose era in brands. He noted the beginning of a new post-purpose era, where brands will be seen as villains if they don’t put people’s dreams, aspirations, and creativity first.

Mr. Matthew Patsky, CEO & Portfolio Manager of Trillium Asset Management, spoke about the efforts to engage with the companies that they hold on to behalf of their clients to press for positive change on ESG topics or opportunities to improve ESG policies, performance, or impact.

Finally, Mr. Spyros Raptis, General Manager for Greece and Cyprus of Schneider Electric, spoke about the sustainable transformation focusing on buildings and industry, transport, and power generation.
