ELEPAP-Rehabilitation for The Disabled- today
Since 1937, ELEPAP-Rehabilitation for The Disabled, the first non-profit, non-governmental, charity organisation in Greece, has opened wide its doors for the rehabilitation of children with different types of physical disabilities (i.e. cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, various syndromes) accompanied by sensory, cognitive and speech problems from birth to 16 years. ELEPAP offers diagnosis, therapy, counseling, education and vocational training. ELEPAP supports children with disabilities and their families, with devotion, love and patience in order to develop to the utmost their potential through therapies and programmes that will help them to take their steps forward for a better life.

ELEPAP continuously follows the international developments, participating as an active member of Rehabilitation International and its European Branch and through them as a member of the European Disability Forum.

More than 100,000 children and their families have found the support and help they need to face effectively their problems and to integrate easier in the society and the open labour market.

ELEPAP operates six daycare centres in Athens, Thessaloniki, Chania, Ioannina, Volos and Agrinio. Its experienced and fully trained personnel amounts to 270 persons, who offer their services daily to 1,500 children nationwide.

ELEPAP is supported by devoted volunteers offering their services in different domains, which include professionals in the medical field, volunteers who support children in their daily functioning and promote their recreational activities, and volunteers who organise different fund raising events.

Our services
The services of ELEPAP have been designed to promote a double goal comprising the enhancement of potential capabilities of each child and the psychosocial support of their family members. The rehabilitation progress of each child is closely monitored through regularly held multidisciplinary meetings which assess and set new therapeutic, educational, recreational and psychosocial goals and steps. School busses are provided for the transportation of the children who attend the educational and rehabilitation programs till early afternoon, in all ELEPAP´s day care units.

Medical services
Continuous medical care is provided by an interdisciplinary medical team comprised by Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physicians, Orthopedics, Neurologists, Child Psychiatrists, Pediatricians, Ophthalmologists, and Dentists.

Vocational Training Centre
The vocational training centres provide pre-vocational and vocational training programs for young adults 16-30 years in order to promote their social and work integration in the open labor market. Novice recreational occupational programs such as the ELEPAP Radio as well as European initiatives provide the opportunity for social and personal fulfillment of young adults with physical disabilities.

The vocational Training centre of ELEPAP ATHENS is accredited by the National Accreditation Centre for Continuing Vocational Training for professionals in the field of Health, Social welfare, Rehabilitation and Informatics.

In addition ELEPAP serves as a practical training CENTRE for senior students of different paramedical, medical and social studies departments of Universities in Greece and abroad.

Outcome of our work
ELEPAP has been awarded for its valuable work: the Athens Academy Silver Medal (1953), the Greek Red Cross Diploma along with the Gold Cross (1972) Mayor of Athens, Medal of Honor and Goodness of the city of Athens (1995).

A significant number of children succeeded to overcome and forget their handicap. Many children have been assisted to enhance their motor functioning, their ability to communicate, their self esteem and self perception, reaching their full potential surpassing their personal goals and the expectations of their families and social environment.

Some stood, others walked and others learned to be able to care for themselves. Some children spoke better, others perfectly. Some developed internal speech through augmentative, alternative communication means and computers, breaking the barrier of their passive silence.

An important number of graduates of the vocational training programs have found their place in the open labor market and others found themselves in a dynamic environment of multifaceted social interaction, creative activities and support.

Finally ELEPAP provides a continuous advisory role and co-operation to all organisations -- Governmental, Local Authorities, Public and Private Institutions -- which promote effective solutions to the problems and equal rights for children with disabilities.

ELEPAP's commitment
The Commitment of ELEPAP remains always two folded : to expand our network of the care of children with physical disabilities in order to reach all children regardless of their residence and to provide "the state-of-the-art" services for the improvement of the physical, mental and psychosocial function of every child. A continuous vision of ELEPAP is to create a centre of independent living for our children who will become tomorrow's adults.

Support the work of ELEPAP
The annual budget of ELEPAP amounts today to 8.000.000 Euros and is covered 14% by the Ministry of Health and Social Solidarity and 25% by the medical fees from the national insurance companies.

The remaining budget comes from valuable donations of old and new friends, from the participation in different fund raising events which are organised for children and adults and from irreplaceable corporate sponsorships.

Please participate in the effort of ELEPAP.

  • Become a subscriber of devotion with an annual contribution.
  • "Adopt" a disabled child in need, offering to pay its expenses for its rehabilitation programme.
  • Become a Donor of Happiness (christenings, weddings, anniversaries). Your gifts will bring happiness to our children.
  • You can deposit the amount you wish in the bank accounts of ELEPAP

The financial support of all of us -- as individuals, organisations or business people in the framework of the Company Social Responsibility -- is really indispensable and contributes to the materialisation of our aim for equal rights of all children with physical disabilities for a meaningful, fulfilling and socially integrated life.

NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL REHABILITATION PROGRAMME FOR PEOPLE AFTER A BRAIN INJURY

Since 2008, ELEPAP has implemented the Neuropsychological Rehabilitation Programme for people after a brain injury in co-operation with the Brain Injury Day Treatment Programme of the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, New York Medical School, U.S.A. The Programme is supported by the funding of Eurobank EFG.

The Programme addresses systematically and in an integrated fashion, the cognitive remedial, behavioural/emotional, interpersonal, and vocational aspects of the neuropsychological rehabilitation of the brain-injured individual.

The Programme aims at enabling the individual to regain, to the highest degree possible:

  • competence and independence in living arrangements, self-care, and managing one’s personal affairs;
  • competence and reliability in relating to others (interpersonal and social adjustment);
  • competence and reliability in performing academic and/or work- related activities, which are relevant to determining future vocational/ academic potential;
  • a stable emotional adjustment to the disability, including the calm acceptance of the permanence of one’s brain injury, a positive, hopeful outlook on the future, and the improvement of one's self-esteem.

The Theraputic Milieu Setting
The Programme is conducted as a therapeutic community. This creates conditions that facilitate the functional rehabilitation of the individual. It provides:

  • a safe and structured environment which optimises learning;
  • a supportive peer group to help individuals learn to modify maladaptive behaviors, practice newly acquired compensatory strategies, build empathy for others and adopt realistic expectations;
  • involvement of significant others to achieve the desired transfer of learning from the remedial setting (programme) into functional life.

Treatment is on an outpatient basis, Mondays through Thursdays, from 9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The treatment cycle is 20 consecutive weeks, for a total of 400 hours; There are three phases of treatment: intensive remedial; pre-vocational/work trial; and follow-up. Significant others are required to participate regularly.
